Five Fitness Faces Series: Jenner Junior

Welcome to part 4 of my blog series entitled, "Five Fitness Faces". It is a collection of answers to questions that I asked of five fitness travelers that I have met all over the world from Germany to Sweden to USA, these five people embody what CarryOnTravelFitness is all about! For part 4 of the series, meet Jenner Junior. Jenner is originally from Recife, Brazil, but now resides in Montreal, Quebec. He is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt and teaches at Carlson Gracie Montreal. Even though I've known Jenner for only two months, I feel like I've known him for way longer! Let's hear what Jenner has to say:

  1. How do you stay fit? Any sports, lifting, Crossfit...etc?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu 2 or 3 times a week and I work out 5 to 6 days a week. Usually I take one day off to rest or no day off depending on my schedule.

  1. How do you stay fit while traveling?

It depends on how long I’ll stay away. If I stay away for a short time of 4 or 5 days, I bring my gi with me and hit a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gym to train a couple times and go jogging. If I stay for a longer time, I’ll bring my gi to train and I try to work out with weights and jogging as well.

3. What is your favorite place that you have traveled to? Why?

I’ve been in a few cities but I will rank two as my favourites, they are: Amsterdam – Such a lovely and charmy city, you have arts, museums, parties and Peace at the same time, very friendly and open people! I would rank Montreal as well, when I was here for the first time on vacation I loved the city, it’s art and creativity everywhere, so many festivals and things happening at the very same time, I really enjoy this city!

4. How do you balance healthy eating while sampling the local cuisine while on the road?

Actually I just try to avoid eating junk food. I think knowing the local cuisine is one of the ways to discover and know the place you’re visiting. I believe it’s important to try to balance things and keep yourself active.

5. 3 words to describe your fitness regime.

Avoid eating crap!

6. What is your most embarrassing travel story?

A – I ran away from the police in Amsterdam after a drunk friend sat on a random bike and walked around making fun of it, the officer just thought he was trying to steal the bike. He just came alone in a motorcycle and told us to stay right there, spoke something in dutch on his radio and left very fast, we didn’t know if he would come back, but I never ran so fast in my life. In the end we were safe and sound! Haha

7. Solo Travel or Partner/ Group Travel?

I like traveling with a partner or group. I think it is awesome to see, discover, live and share experiences in a different environment with your partner and friends. You can see things with your own eyes and share with them and also absorb the way they see things and feel about it. Solo can be very interesting too, specially when you need to know more about yourself, know new people and get totally disconnected of the bubble you used to live in.

8. Any advice for someone that wants to stay in shape while they travel

Whichever is the sport that you practice, try to practice it at the place you are visiting. More than staying in shape, it is a great way to meet people, see the places and the local sights, it opens your mind and makes your experience even greater.
