5 Badass Reasons Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Is Great For Traveling

I have recently gotten into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ for short). Sure, I have taken a few classes here and there, but I finally decided to get serious about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and decided to join Carlson Gracie Montreal. It may intimidating at first doing a martial art, but the benefits are numerous and it is a great way to stay fit while traveling. All you need is your gi and you are ready to roll! Here are my 5 badass reasons why BJJ is great for travelers:

    1. You Can Train Everywhere You GO- Lima, Peru? Yup! Chicago, Illinois? Of course! Mangalia, Romania? Why not! No matter what continent you are on, there is always a gym to go train at. While most large cities have one or more locations, I love that there are small towns you can go train in as well. The best part of all is that if you join BJJ Globetrotters, you get a FREE WEEK  at all academies listed. I was able to take advantage of this and train in Chicago with the Carlson Gracie Branch there.
    2. Full Body Workout- My body has never been more sore in my life than one crazy intense training session with BUSHIDO FIGHT TEAM in Lima that left me unable to properly walk to the bathroom the next morning.

While I was cursing throughout the entire experience, I was hooked. Instead of lifting weights, you are lifting and bending people into shapes you never knew existed. Nothing works yours glutes more than trying to hip up when someone has you in mount.

    3. Self Defense- Gain confidence defending yourself. This is especially great for solo travelers, men and women alike. Also, who wouldn’t want a travel companion who can rear naked choke someone trying to rob you on Copacabana Beach?
    4. Challenge Yourself- My favorite part about BJJ is that in today’s world of instant gratification, jiu jitsu forces you to be dedicated for a long period of time. It takes about 10 years to achieve black belt status. It is a commitment to not only bettering yourself as an athlete, but also improving mentally. You can also compete at any belt level, which is great for any former athlete

that wants to rekindle the competitive flame.

    5. Social Aspect- People who practice jiu jitsu are some of the friendliest people you will meet. They are always down to help a beginner with basic moves like “Shrimping”. Beyond that, they are locals who know their city and the majority love to go out and have a great time! I got to experience this first hand by Matsurfing with Juan in Lima who took us to his friend’s beach house and some of the best hidden places in the city (including the best ceviche I have ever had!).
